In 2015 the East African Community Secretariat became the host of the Observatory for Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management that serves the East African Community (EAC) countries. Following a regional kick-off meeting to introduce the EAC Observatory to users and providers, a series of national engagements has been taking place in the EAC countries since the last quarter of 2015.

The Pacific Islands region has responsibility for 10% of the global ocean surface and hosting the world's largest tuna stocks. Currently, marine protected areas cover just over 2% of the world’s oceans, and only about 1% is strongly protected in no-take marine reserves. In this context, small Pacific Island states with massive ocean territory are taking a global leadership position by establishing and effectively managing large scale marine protected areas and others are making similar pledges.

Capacity development for protected areas management is a top priority for conservationists and a major component of the BIOPAMA (Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management) programme. In the Caribbean, BIOPAMA's capacity development efforts aim to improve the region’s protected area management capacity through the professional development of personnel and expansion of the network of professionals involved in biodiversity conservation and management in the field of protected areas.
