The webinar will take place on 7 May at 15h (GMT+2) and will address the question: how to bring together data from many different sources, to generate useful evidence for conservation and make it accessible to decision makers?
The BIOPAMA programme aims at improving the long-term conservation and sustainable development in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific countries. The better use and monitoring of information on biodiversity and protected areas is a key component of this programme. In Eastern and Southern Africa, IUCN and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission are working together with the Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) to establish a Regional resource hub for protected areas and biodiversity. This regional resource hub will provide a variety of services to the regional conservation actors, including data analysis, products development for monitoring and reporting, and supporting decision-making in the region.
The speakers for this webinar include:
- Dr Tiwonge I. Mzumara – Gawa, Lecturer in Ecology at the Malawi University of Science and Technology, and ornithologist at Museums of Malawi. Dr Gawa will present key results and lessons learnt from the Mapping Biodiversity Priorities project for Malawi.
- Beryl Nyamgeroh, BIOPAMA technical officer and developer for Eastern and Southern Africa. Ms. Nyamgeroh will explain how RCMRD’s spatial data expertise and infrastructure can support biodiversity-relevant data sharing and re-use in the BIOPAMA Regional Resource Hub.
- Ngugi Kimani, Global Information Technology Lead at RCMRD. Mr Kimani participates in the arrangement of data and applications systematically to provide convenient access for all and he manages RCMRD servers and datasets.
- Dr Lucy Bastin, Developer and analyst for the Digital Observatory for Protected Areas (DOPA) at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission. Dr. Bastin is the JRC focal point for the BIOPAMA programme in Eastern Africa.
The Mapping Biodiversity Priorities project is funded by the Japan Biodiversity Fund within the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, and is managed by UN Environment-WCMC with support from SANBI.
