Financing and resourcing protected and conserved areas: next BIOPAMA webinar

31 May 2019

The discussion will examine the current challenge faced both globally and within countries to adequately finance and resource biodiversity conservation, particularly at a landscape level. Protected and conserved areas require tailor-made finance solutions and have specific resource needs that need to be addressed deliberately.

The discussion will aim to unpack this in simple terms and give financing and resourcing definitions and basic terminology. The audience will receive an introduction to these concepts to begin the conversation about conservation finance in their own countries. Practical examples and success stories will be shared as an example of what can be achieved through innovation and a targeted approach.

The key speaker for this webinar is Candice Stevens. She is a biodiversity finance expert and niche tax specialist who works at creating innovative finance solutions for landscape conservation.

Candice StevensCandice introduced the first effective biodiversity tax incentive into the South African protected areas network and, together with the Government of South Africa, received the Pathfinder Award Special Commendation for this global innovation. She heads up the Innovative Conservation Finance Unit, housed within Wilderness Foundation Africa, where she works extensively with multiple stakeholders and industry leaders across different sectors to ultimately plug South Africa’s biodiversity finance gap.

She sits on a number of national and international committees regarding area-based conservation and financing and resourcing. Candice has a background in both law and commerce as well as experience in protected and conserved area policy and expansion, bio-diversity finance, environmental law and policy-making on financial incentives and is regarded as a global expert her in field.
