The recently closed IUCN World Conservation Congress 2016 enabled the world to exchange, learn and share solutions for our planet. The development of resources and capacity for improving the biodiversity actions and decisions were part of this global agenda. Several resources launched and presented at this congress were possible with the support and contribution from BIOPAMA, among many other partners.
The Protected Planet Report 2016 shows that the world is on track to meet a major global conservation target, with 14.7 % of the Earth’s land and 10 % of its territorial waters under protection. However, the report also shows that crucial biodiversity areas are being left out, key species and habitats are underrepresented and inadequate management is limiting the effectiveness of protected areas. A Global Register of Competences for Protected Area Practitioners is a cornerstone of a global IUCN WCPA initiative for professionalising protected area management, initiated as part of the preparation process for the IUCN World Parks Congress in Sydney in November 2014. The goal of compiling the register has been to define and classify all of the competences that may be required for effective, efficient and equitable management of protected areas. Capacity development for protected and other conserved areas in the Pacific Island region is an important tool for promoting action. It highlights the importance of culturally ? responsive capacity development, with Pacific Islanders defining the most appropriate approaches to be used. This strategy has been developed in the framework of the BIOPAMA programme and together with the Pacific Islands Roundtable for Nature Conservation – the Protected Areas Working Group.
