All Eyes on Marseille: Impac3 to Start Soon

2 October 2013

Every four years, the International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC) brings together major maritime stakeholders from around the globe to assist in the conservation and sustainable development of the oceans. IUCN is the co-organizer of this year’s edition, IMPAC3, which will take place in Marseille (France) from 21 to 25 October 2013.

In addition to the major role in co-organizing this large international gathering, IUCN will showcase a number of projects implemented and supported by IUCN offices in Europe during the event.

The knowledge café organized by the BIOPAMA Programme (Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management) will identify “Inspiring Solutions for Developing Capacity for Marine Protected Areas” and address the role of the Programme in the management of marine protected areas. Participants from Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific, as well as Europe and other regions of the world, will take part in the debate. The knowledge café will take place on 25 October during the “Regional approaches” day.

IUCN EU Overseas Programme and the Global Island Partnership (GLISPA) will be holding an event on “Championing Aichi Targets: Islands key role and bright spots for marine biodiversity conservation”. After assessing the recommendations, and through the use of participatory facilitation techniques, a range of Island Bright Spots that can be potentially replicated will be highlighted during the event.

The IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation, in participation with MedPAN (Network of MPA managers in the Mediterranean) will address key issues related to monitoring tools for invasive species, networks of marine protected areas, marine protected areas for fisheries and Conservation of Open Seas. Case studies from Morocco, the Mediterranean, West Africa and the Caribbean, and the projects MedPAN North and MedOpenSeas will be presented during a series of workshops, discussions and presentation events.
