The Biodiversity and Protected Area Management (BIOPAMA) Programme is pleased to welcome a new team member, Ms Beryl Nyamgemoh.
Ms Beryl Nyamgemoh was recently appointed by IUCN ESARO as the Technical Officer for the East African Community (EAC) Regional Observatory for Biodiversity and Protected Areas. The Observatory is housed within the EAC Secretariat located in Arusha, Tanzania, and is aimed at supporting more effective protected area management and biodiversity conservation in the region.
Beryl holds a Masters’ degree in Geo-information Science and Earth Observation for Natural Resource Management and she brings to the Observatory her vast experience working with GIS (Geographic Information Systems), having worked for the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) as a GIS assistant, for Akare Mappers and Research-GIS Analysts and for the Regional Center for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) as a Remote Sensing/ Geographical Information Systems Technician. Beryl describes herself as a person who easily adapts to new situations and experiences.
As the Technical Officer, she will enhance the operations of the Regional Observatory through the effective management of the Regional Reference Information System (RRIS). “The observatory is a very good and important initiative especially in this part of Africa and I am glad to be part of it. With proper implementation of the RRIS- we will be able to see a big difference with how biodiversity and protected areas are managed and I feel that with relevant training in the region this can be achieved sooner” she says.
The Technical Officer will work closely with the regional (East and Southern Africa) and global BIOPAMA teams at IUCN, the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission as well as the East African Partner States (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda).
Beryl will be based at the East African Community Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania. She can be contacted at beryl.nyamgeroh@iucn.org.
We wish her well in her new role.
