From May 2013 Steve Peedell will be the new Joint Research Centre (JRC) project leader for BIOPAMA, taking over from Philippe Mayaux, who will be devoting his time to working on secondment to EuropeAid in Brussels. The European Commission JRC is IUCN’s main partner in implementing the protected areas component of BIOPAMA.
Steve has worked at JRC in Ispra, Italy, for 17 years, and for 25 years has specialised in geospatial information systems for environmental applications. He has an MSc in Natural Resource Management from the University of Leicester in the UK. Prior to 2005 he was very much involved in technical developments supporting EU environmental legislation (Natura2000, Water Framework Directive), and then led a research team working on development and implementation of specifications for a European Spatial Data Infrastructure (INSPIRE). Since 2009 he has focused on projects in the African, Caribbean, Pacific (ACP) regions. Steve is the coordinator for the technical developments by JRC in BIOPAMA to build the Regional Reference Information Systems for biodiversity and protected areas.
As the Commission’s in-house science service, the Joint Research Centre’s mission is to provide EU policies with independent, evidence-based scientific and technical support throughout the whole policy cycle. Working in close cooperation with policy Directorates-General, the JRC addresses key societal challenges while stimulating innovation through developing new methods, tools and standards, and sharing its know-how with the Member States, the scientific community and international partners.
